The Bristol

The Bristol No. 12

These scopes are scattered here and there...I delivered one to Miti Araki at Cozy's place in 1997 (and of course fell in love), so I'm pretty sure there's still at least one in Japan!

The Polyangular feature of the Bristol allowed the viewer to shift the mirrors to display anything from a two point, to an infinite number of points, but after awhile, I think I put a stop in the mechanism to avoid closing the mirrors up to tightly and causing a problem (I hate that sound).

Here I am putting the finishing touches on a re-freshening of the last Bristol, No. 12, which lived, unfinished (like a lot of things) in my house for almost 20 years before being sent to a nice lady in Napa Valley, California, who purchased it to go along with another that she had added to her collection many years ago.  She wanted each of her daughters to have one.

The images in the collection below were taken through Bristol No. 12...The last of twelve (not including the prototype) of this edition built between 1996 and 2004.  It was a grand experiment in actually completing an edition that I started out to do, with an actual number of scopes that I felt that I could create without becoming totally bored with making after awhile...You artists know how that is!
